About James Barton
James E. “Pint” Barton was an outstanding baseball player for the Golden Eagles from 1984-87 under head coach Barry McCauliff. A 4-year starting center fielder, he was a strong defensive presence and was 10 for 10 in stolen bases helping the 1984 team win the PSAC-Western Division and place second at the PSAC Championships.
As a sophomore in 1985 he hit .363 (33 for 91) with 7 doubles, 4 triples, 1 HR, had 16 RBIs and was 7 for 8 in stolen bases. Barton was a PSAC-West first team selection and Clarion finished second in the PSAC-West. In 1986 he batted .333 (40 for 120), had 5 doubles, 5 triples, 2 HRs and 9 RBIs with 16 of 17 stolen base attempts.
In 1987 he was voted the PSAC-West “Player of the Year” while setting the Clarion single season record hitting .452 (33 of 73) with 5 doubles, 5 triples, 3 home runs and 20 RBIs with 10 stolen bases. Also named an NCAA Division II All-American and All-Region selection in 1987, he set the school record for career stolen bases (43), attempts (46) and triples (15). His single season records of slugging percentage (.781 – 1987), stolen bases (16 – 1986) triples (5) still stand today.
Pint also played basketball in the 1987 and 88 seasons and scored 260 points with 49 assists, 38 steals and 51 rebounds. A 1983 graduate of Aliquippa High, James and wife Maureen reside in Bethel Park. Sons include Jance, James II and Kyle.
